Nervous System 101 for Busy Brains
You are not lazy, you are not broken, your body is just doing its job a little too well. Here is the gentle version of nervous-system regulation.
If you have ever felt wired and tired at the same time, unable to relax even though you are exhausted, that is not a character flaw. That is a nervous system stuck in a loop it does not know how to exit on its own.
For a long time I thought regulation meant forcing myself to be calm. It does not. It means giving your body real, physical signals that it is safe enough to let go.
The three-breath reset
When my mind is spinning in ten directions, I do not try to think my way out of it. I use my breath instead, because breath is the one thing that talks directly to the nervous system without needing words.
Breathe in for four counts, hold for four, breathe out for six. Do it three times. That longer exhale is the signal your body has been waiting for, it tells your system the danger has passed and it can soften.
Why this matters for ADHD brains especially
A dysregulated nervous system and a busy brain feed each other. The more wound up your body feels, the harder it is to focus, and the harder it is to focus, the more wound up you feel. Breaking that loop even a little, even for sixty seconds, changes the whole day.
You do not need an hour of meditation. You need small, repeatable moments that remind your body it is allowed to rest. Start with one today.
